Imagination journey to Mumbai, the vibrant capital of Maharashtra-welcomed our students of JD School of Design for an unforgettable three-day journey into art, design, and heritage. Hands-on in learning culture immersion, it became a harmonious blend of modern innovation and old tradition, shaping perspectives and sparking creativity.
Day 1: Immersion in Design Excellence
Our day started with an optional visit to the revered Sri Siddhivinayak Temple, where attending students experienced the serene ambience of this spiritual landmark. The day then shifted focus toward Design Mumbai 2024, a creative innovation hub, which was hosted at Jio World Garden. Interior design students admired installations from global brands such as Poltrona Frau and Jaipur Rugs and gained insights from industry leaders such as Chris Lefteri and Charu Gandhi.
Meanwhile, students of fashion were exploring the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) – an epitome of modern design and replete with rich cultural connotations. Infinity Mirror Room by the legend Yayoi Kusama, with an infinite array of reflections fills one’s senses; another highlight was the Art House with challenging contemporary showcases. The day ended with a visit to Jio World Drive, where luxury retail spaces taught a thing or two about visual merchandising and trend-spotting.
Day 2: Walking Through History
The second day unfolded in South Bombay, where every corner tells a story. Students explored heritage gems like the Flora Fountain, the artistic lanes of Kala Ghoda, and exhibits at Jehangir Art Gallery. Visits to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) offered glimpses into India’s artistic legacy and modern interpretations.
A day of vibrant shopping at Colaba Causeway was rounded off by a serene walk along Marine Drive, where the skyline of this wondrous city stretched into the setting sun, inspiring dreams and reflection.
Day 3: Heritage Walk
The last day took us to the divine and wonderful world of the Elephanta Caves, an island of historical as well as spiritual significance. Students were fascinated by the magnificence of Trimurti and the intricate mythological panels representing stories of Lord Shiva. Such marvellous rock-cut artwork gave so much insight into ancient Indian art and architecture.
A Journey to Remember
This Mumbai trip for JD School of Design students was more of an edifying journey into the heart of creativity and culture rather than an educational experience. These connections garnered will keep guiding our students in their creative pursuits with endless possibilities in art and design.
